Caracas Arepa Bar

De Pabellon

Don't miss Caracas Arepa Bar in Willimasburg, Brooklyn!   On top of its rave reviews, it's cheap!  One arepa costs between $4.75 - $7.50.  Caracas has two locations, Brooklyn on Grand St. and E. 7th St. in NYC.
La Surena
For those of you who aren't sure, an arepa is a corn-cake "sandwich" filled with a variety of vegetable, meat, an cheese fillngs; a traditional dish from Venezuela.  It is made by grilling it first and then finishing it off in the over which gives a nice crust and a soft inside (sooo good!).  A couple of my favorites are the De Pabellonwhich is filled with shredded beef, black beans, white salty cheese, and sweet plantains, and the La Surena, filled with grilled chicken and chorizo, with avocado slices and a spicy chimi-churri sauce.  The De Pabellon gives you a more hearty and salty taste, while the La Surena had a spicy and sweet flavor.

Don't miss this food stop you won't be disappointed, you make even go back for some more!

Over the weekend I went to the Brooklyn Flea Market in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.  I fell in love, there was so much food to choose from! Yes overwhelming at first, but when you have an appetite like mine it's heaven.  There is a great variety of foods there from made to order brick-oven pizza and tacos, to ice creams, chocolate, and doughnuts.  There's something there for everyone, check out these next few food stops available at the Brooklyn Flea Market!

1.  Liddabit Sweets

Chocolate Doom
Brooklyn-based makers of delicious candies such as chocolate bars, caramels, lollipops, and other treats, using all local ingredients.  My sister and I decided to try out a couple chocolate bars, they were bigger than your normal candy bar and there were NINE different kinds.  FYI: The owners are grads of the French Culinary Institute!

It was hard to choose but we went with a best-seller "The King" and Chocolate Doom.  Based on Elvis, the king himslef, "The King"  is layered with a soft peanut butter nougat, brown-sugar brown butter cookie, and fresh banana ganache, dipped in milk chocolate.  I'm a huge chocolate and candy lover so I loved them and can't wait to try some more!

2.  ScratchBread

Brooklyn-based maker of a variety of breads such as Focaccia, Fougasse, and Whole-Wheat, to other goods like muffins, biscuits, scones, and more!  I'm a HUGE bread fan so I had no problem stopping at their tent.  I controlled myself and only tried out one bread, the Lemon Rosemary & Poppy Seed Muffin.  The inside of the muffin had a fluffy, eggy, airy consistency, resembling that of Pate a Choux, different than a typical muffin.  This gave the muffin a lighter feel and taste and I really liked the contrast between the lemon and rosemary with the poppy seed, I gobbled it all up (and gave my sister a bite, of course).

3.  Solber Pupusas

which both looked ohhh so good, and ended up going with the pupusas.  I was new to pupusas, which are a traditional El Salvadorian food made up of grilled corm masa patties, hand-shaped and stuffed with different fillings. We were immediately attracted by the combination of fillings and the great smell, so we went for it.  I went with a platter of a Jalapeno and Cheese Pupusa and a Chicken and Cheese Pupusa , topped with picked cabbage and onions, jalapenos, and sour cream. Both were delicious, but I could've used a bit less jalapeno in mine; the combination of the toppings and a milder filling is perfect.  Therefore, I preferred the chicken pupusa to the jalapeno, and i think next time I'm going to try the Zucchini and Cheese or the Cod Fish, my boyfriend raved about it!

4.  JNK Frgal Cake

A sweet pie from the Czech Republic, using a yeast-based dough and topped with a variety of cheeses and toppings, from savory to sweet.  We stuck with the dessert pie and had the Pear Frgal.  We both loved it, it was simple and sweet.  The layer of pear had a nice, mild seasoning and was soft, like a puree, and had a thin sugary glaze on top.  What I liked best about it was, they didn't drown the pie in glaze or weigh it down with too much pear; it was just enough of both for a light, sweet bite.

5.  Dough

Makers of delicious doughnuts in Clinton Hill/Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn.  Growing up I ate doughnuts from Peter Pan Bakery in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.  They made doughnuts that no other bakery or doughnut shop could ever compare to.  But Dough may be a contender!

Let's just say, we didn't have just one.  There were about ten different doughnuts to choose from, some of your traditional flavors but a lot of new and interesting flavors too. For example there were a few recognizable flavors like Chocolate with cocoa nibs, and Cinnamon Sugar, along with inventive flavors like Hibiscus with dried Hibiscus flowers, and Passionfruit with cocoa nibs.   The dough was the best part, so fluffy!  There was a consistent texture throughout the dough which I always hated about a poorly made doughnut where the outside was overdone and the inside just wasn't quite fluffy enough.  Biting into the doughnut was like biting into a cloud.  You wouldn't even guess that they were fried, no greasy residue or poorly done deep-frying (which all depends on the temperature and quality of the oil).

My favorite was the Passionfruit, perfect tartiness!  The Cafe Au LaitChocolate with cocoa nibs (you really can't go wrong with a good chocolate doughnut), and the Mandarin Orange are some other great choices.   The doughnuts are large at $2.00-$2.50 a pop, and so worth it!

Trois Pommes Patisserie
260 5th Avenue
Brooklyn, NY  11215

A cute litte bakery in Park Slope, brooklyn.  I came across this bakery when researching the firnd a bakery I could intern at.  After visiting the bakery for the first time, I fell in love with it right away.

After happily landing an internship there I had my share of pastries to taste, from breakfast breads to dessert pastries. Definitely have a try at the macarons.  The Orange Blossom and the Chocolate are my favorite!  It was the first time I've had a macaron and the were delicious!

I think I ate more biscotti than anything else.  The Chocolate Espresso and Pistachio Biscotti are great exceptional.  Being picky with biscotti as I grew up eating homemade ones all the time, I loved these and would be happy having them every morning with my coffee.

Some other great are the Banana Bread, Chocolate Whoopie Pie, and Twinkies, some of their big sellers!  I recommend the Almond Twinkie, it has great flavor and isn't too sweet!

Definitely check out this bakery.  It can be a great start to your day or add a sweet treat to it!
